from patrickstump.com updated 6/30/08
When people make art that well constructed, why should anyone else try?

News

2008-06-30 Heath Ledger RIP
So basically no news is good news. It's a swell thing I got myself a website and nothing worth talking about.
Speaking of feeling inadequate I saw Dark Knight tonight. Any hint of an aspiration to be an actor was leveled in the whiz bang ensemble force that was that little movie. I can't think of a bad performance in it. I don't want to overhype something that couldn't be any more hyped so I'll just say this: I feel like I have been the lone Tim Burton fan holding strong to my appreciation for Batman and Batman Returns. I've always insisted they were the best Batman films long after Batman Begins came out. Jack Nicholson is probably in the upper 5 actors of his own lifetime. But Jack himself said acting is a collaborative effort. And there it is: This movie was one of those magic ones where everybody was trying to make the same movie. That momentum is worth seeing.
My hometown and first love was featured fairly prominently in the film. Of course I am referring to CHICAGO Illinois. I was happy to see some familiar street signs in Gotham.
I also have to say I was pretty humbled by the talent I had the blind luck of seeing the film with...I was sitting adjacent to Rilo Kiley and Greg from the Bird and the Bee. I felt like easily the most talentless person in the room (cue some jock in some messageboard to agree). So yeah. This evening was almost frustrating. When people make art that well constructed, why should anyone else try?
But then why shouldn't anyone else? Right? Exactly. So I'm going to go write some songs and hope they're an 8 billionth as good as Dark Knight, Rilo Kiley's last record, or Bird and the Bee's last record.
-p.stump

2008-06-13 Yup
So the big reason I posted that cryptic message a while ago (the one where I insinuated I was working on a record but couldn't say what) was that in this great big business of records, things take time. I've been working secretly on a couple records. Both would be big news if my work were to be used...mostly big news for me cause I'd just be excited. However, it makes for slow news doesn't it? Cause I'll be working on this stuff for months more or less exclusively and I won't be able to report into this here little site.
At the risk of being more vague I'll just say I'm busy. Very busy. The only things I can report on are:
A) My short is currently in the color correction stage of post-production. Very cool.
and
B) The good folks at Gretsch have begun work on a Patrick Stump guitar...currently being called the "Stump-o-matic." It will be a solid-body akin to the Corvette model I've been playing onstage for the past year or so but it will have many bells and whistles I need not spoil here. That is all for now. Off to work. Whatever that is.
-p.stump

2008-06-07
The Moustachette is wrapped. It was a great experience, I'll let you know when it's done done.
Barack Obama made history by becoming the first African American presidential nominee of a major political party in the United States. Actually, and even more impressively, he's the first non-white to lead a party in United States history. I'm proud to be an American not only for the symbolic victory for the civil rights movement but also simply because I believe in the man as a candidate and I'm happy to believe in a candidate. That's a rarity in the game of politics.
I'm nearing some news on the secret stuff I've been working on. Either way I'll let you know.
-p.stump

2008-05-30 Sex In the City Isn't As Cool As:
I have nothing to do with it, just excited.

2008-05-19 Private Eyes, They're Watching You.
Tomorrow I'll be performing at the BMI awards with the Hall and Oates band. I'm pretty stoked on it. It's something of an honor to be asked. Speaking of honors it's in honor of Hall and Oates and their what...35th anniversary? I don't know if I were some kind of surprise guest or anything so maybe I blew my cover, but I'm kinda freaking out about it. I rehearsed today and it felt great.
Tyga's ablum "No Introduction" comes out June 10th. I supplied the beats for the tracks "Supersize Me," "Don't Regret It Now," "Woww," and "Est. (80's Baby)" So for you Stump completists (so far I've only counted my parents) you should check out that record.
I have nothing to do with it but my friends Misery Signals are putting out a new record July 22nd. They're a pretty awesome hardcore band.
-p.stump

2008-05-18 Party Time. Excellent.
Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. You Know Who. It was a very good night tonight and I'm ecstatic about the whole thing.
I do, however, have less tabloid ready news and it is this: My film "the Moustachette," is now completely cast and we begin shooting next weekend. In a few weeks I'll be officially able to say I'm a director...if not a pompous douche with a camera.
In other news I saw Alex and Cash from the Cab tonight. I'm very proud of those kids. If you get a chance to see them on tour it's worth it. They happened to be hanging out with another up and coming group of young upstarts currently known as Blake...though that name may be subject to change if I'm understanding their situation correctly. They as well are worth a listen. And I have absolutely nothing to do with them so I'm not even plugging something I worked on haha. That must mean I'm sincere sometimes.
Back to dogsitting...and that's not some witty or esotheric in-joke. I'm dogsitting.
-p.stump

2008-05-07 Steady As She Goes
So as I've said earlier I've been working on all sorts of projects. The end of this month is devoted to shooting my directorial debut, a short film called "The Moustachette." I'm gonna be finishing casting probably next week.
Yup, still working on some secret thing. More like waiting on some secret news about secret thing (i.e., whether or not I am working on anything...secret or otherwise).
The Cab's new record debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseeker chart. I was walking through Virgin Megastore skimming through Cobra Starship's AP cover, on the phone recieveing the news about the Cab, while I was there looking to see if the Rolling Stone with a picture of Tyga in it was on the stands yet. There's a write-up somewhere about how they picked Tyga as the breakout star of Bamboozle. I'm pretty excited since those are the last three records I did. It was a nice little moment for me. Made me feel like a real live bonefied producer.
-p.stump

2008-05-07 I'm Not the Praying Type
My heart goes out to the people of Myanmar. Thus far 100,000 people are dead as the result of a cyclone and that number keeps rising. It is at times like this that I urge people looking to donate money, materials, or effort to remember other tragedies. There will always be an influx of materials donated immediately after such a horrendous national event. Sometimes though, greater good is done by smaller consistent donations made over a long period of time. If you're going to donate blood for the cause in Myanmar, I'd urge you to wait a month or so until it's off the news. Maybe even a year, because that's when people recovering from this horrible accident are really going to need it...when the attention dies down. After the news cameras go away, those people are still going to be in desperate need of aid.

2008-05-04 Robert Danger Downey
Iron Man is awesome. Easily rivals X2 for best Marvel movie. If you like Marvel Comics, stay after the credits.
I saw it at Arclight and got to see trailors for Dark Knight and Indiana Jones. I really wish I was 8 years old right now cause this'd be the coolest summer to go to the movies ever.
-p.stump

2008-05-03 No News Is Good News
I'm working on a record but I can't say what it is. And the funny thing is I have a long history of working on records and not ever being utilized. So I don't want to jinx it. Suffice it to say I'm rather excited about this particular album yet have already resigned myself to the probability that the songs I wrote won't make it to the final release. Oh Patrick Stump, you pessimist.
-p.stump

2008-04-27 24...minus the Jack Bauer
Yup. So I'm 24 today. As of 1:06 AM. I guess it's about time for a quarter-life crisis.
I was at an acting coach a while ago and I was filling out this little questionaire thingy in the waiting room. They ask for the range of what ages you could play. Thus far as a crappy little actor I've played a 30+ murder suspect on Law and Order, and I was in talks to play a 15 year old Oklahoma boy. I guess I figured that was my range so I wrote it down. Looking at those numbers though, it felt kinda weird. I feel like I could convincingly be either but nothing in between. Like I'm missing my 20's and I'm not even halfway through them. You get a mortgage and you drive a Civic and you take your dog to the vet and pretty soon you find yourself going to bed at 11 and begrudgingly becoming a morning person. I guess in retrospect, 23 felt a lot more like what I thought 33 would feel like. I guess I'll have to wait 10 years to know for sure. But then I feel like I'm still a little-ass kid in a lot of ways. I realized I've never seen the Godfather movies. Or like Caddyshack. Cause I'm a kid. And I have a lot more to do with my life. Like see the Godfather. And Caddyshack. And then there's the fact that I'm a little dude at a towering 5'4...closer to 5'5...but I feel like when you're as short as I am, if you're really grabbing at those percentiles of an inch that's just sad. I'd rather round down. But the point is I'll always be looking up to everybody like when you're a toddler. I mean, I can't grow a beard yet. I shaved my sideburns a few months back and I got carded everywhere I went for a couple weeks. I guess it's like how Yoda tells Luke his mind is never on where he is or what he's doing. And I'm still young enough to think that's a relevant analogy.
-p.stump

2008-04-25 The Scarlett Letter
I hear Scarlett Johansson's putting out a debut album of Tom Waits covers. I'm a fan of Waits so I started pestering her management around a year or two ago to duet with her. She rejected me like I was in high school again with an alleged "Oh no, I hate Fall Out Boy." Fair enough, that's not the first time I've heard that this week.
Nonetheless I was bummed because I really just wanted to sing some Tom Waits. So I sat at a piano, pressed record, and plunked this one out.
Were I trying to impress message boards with my knowledge of Waits, I certainly would have picked something more obscure. Perhaps something off the out of print Night On Earth soundtrack. Or the song he wrote for Solomon Burke. Or that early demo of his I think is called "Up Shit Creek," or something to that effect. But fuck that, the value of scene points is dropping like that of American currency or my patience for LA drivers. I just really like this song, so I did it. Like to hear it? Here it goes...
-p.stump

2008-04-22 Doug Bruce: Racist
Go over to www.douglasbruce.com and send this guy a piece of your mind. In a session of the Colorado state house of representatives, Representative Bruce warned of the influx of more "Illiterate Peasants," to Colorado...in reference to Latino workers. Yeah. He said that. Out loud. And doesn't think he did anything wrong. And on this guy's first day as a representative, he kicked a photographer. Totally classy gent. If you'd like to see his remarks, head over to CNN: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/04/22/dnt.lawmaker.mexican.slur.kusa
From Doug Bruce's website:
"I am a pro-life, traditional family values, social and fiscal conservative - a Ronald Reagan Republican."
Apparently he believes strongly in the traditional family value of demeaning an entire race of people. I must have been raised in a very different traditional family than Mr. Bruce.
In case my sarcasm isn't plain without the tone of my voice behind it, I'll spell it out: Niether Doug Bruce nor racism are cool. And the fact that this guy got elected to a public office upsets me quite a bit, especially on the eve of a presidential election. Thank goodness that none of the leading presidential candidates share Representative Bruce's opinions on Latinos or any race for that matter.
-p.stump

2008-04-17 For all of you trivia fans...
So the other day a live 150 lb cougar was found to have been living on the North side of Chicago. The animal was approached by a group of police officers who confronted the animal and resorted to shooting/killing it. The funny thing is it happened on the corner of Roscoe and Hoyne, where there's a little gelatto place. Above that is an apartment Pete, Joe, and I shared with our friend Brett for a year. We held shows there and stuff. A live friggin COUGAR. That's pretty amazing. Hahaha

2008-04-13 News is fun
So first and foremost: the Cab's debut record comes out on April 29th. I guess my title is "Executive Producer" on that record...basically I wasn't day to day producer but I worked really hard on like 4 or 5 songs. The rest was done by Matt Squire and really the band themselves who are quite talented gents. So by April 29th when it comes out I will be 24, officially one year left for some celebrity magazine to put me in one of those "Most Talented Stars Under 25" lists. Huh? What do you think? Ah, that's okay. Handling rejection might as well be my middle name.
Tyga's record is done and I'm not sure of its release date but I'm quite proud of it. I did the beats for 4 tracks on that one as well. Keep your ears to the ground for that.
Gym Class Heroes is still going, feels great. I love that record I must say. Travis is doing some really interesting stuff.
I may have some special media posts coming up in the next few weeks so check back here periodically. I may have some fun exclusive junk...or maybe it won't be exclusive, who knows. But it'll be junk for sure.
I'm also still working on my short film tentatively titled the Moustachette about an arrogant wannabe artist and his working stiff best friend and their acceptance or total lack of acceptance of where they are in life. The script is done, my step brother and I are scouting locations and finishing casting. I'm very excited about it guys, so when you see it go easy on me. Haha
And the biggest news of all time (for little old me anyhow): I finally after years of working towards it, have my drumset. It's been my dream since I was a little tike to have a real nice drumset with a black beauty snare and a place to play said drumset. Well, it all fell into place. Expect me to brag about my mild skill in the near future. I believe I'm what they call "Par." Toto beats, here I come.
-p.stump

2008-03-28 Can'tarctica
So as I'm sure you already know, I'm not after this week a world record holder. I'm of course refering to our "failure" to perform on the dwindling continent of Antarctica. Most of my travelling companions on this little endeavor are deflated about what could be called a defeat, but all I wanted to do was A) See a gorgeously untouched landscape before global warming destroys it and B) Hopefully bring some attention (and cameras) to said environmental disaster. I don't know if I've been successful in that at all, but I will say this: While we were in Punta Arenas, Chile at our nice little hotel, a chunk of Antarctica at least the size of Manhattan (I don't remember how large exactly) melted and fell off. This isn't a normal thing for the penguins and seals who eat them...who I think make up most of the permenant residents of Antarctica. If our being there helped in any way bring any attention to the sad story of our planet's emptiest continent, then I feel successful.

Damn, that looks either boring or pompous in paragraph form. Probably both. I should stick to writing music.

Oh, I'd also like to give my hats off to the wonderful town of Punta Arenas and its' residents who were very welcoming to all of us who came into town and pretty much caused a fuss.

-p.stump
2008-03-19 Updates
Gym Class is going great. Travis is laying down some amazing stuff and I can't wait to hear the finished product.
Worked today on a little secret surprise for Hush Sound fans. If you haven't yet picked up their record, it's great.
I don't like to be too overtly political cause I feel like it's not always appropriate. It's not my place to name a candidate and publicly lend my support. I've been privately supporting Barrack Obama for a few years now (as many of my friends and family know) and I have been so excited to see how far he's come. However, I do have to say I think impartially that everyone in America needs to see this speech. It's very long (about 40 minutes) and it's very in depth, but it covers something very important and I cannot sum up a word of it without doing it a disservice.
If Barack Obama doesn't get the nomination of the Democratic Party, I'd like to just thank him for finally saying some things I've always wished politicians would say since I was a little kid.
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/hisownwords/

2008-03-15 Justin Pierre and Patrick Stump collaboration?!? Hey everybody, it's Patrick Stump. Welcome to my website. The basic idea behind this one was that I wanted a place I could update people on all of my non-Fall Out Boy related projects I.E. "Patrick Stump...Producer!" and "Patrick Stump...Actor?!?" So yeah, not much happening on the latter front but the former is blazing right now. Starting vocals on the new Gym Class Heroes record (and no, I'm not singing on it. I'm leaving that to the utterly qualified members of the band), finished up some executive production on the new Cab record (Alex has some pipes), I've got a few beats on the new Tyga record, and as many of you already know I have the honor of appearing on the new Roots single "Birthday Girl." I hear Mos Def is on that new Roots album so I'm sure it's gonna be legendary. On the acting front I'm working on my own little short film I'm writing, directing, and starring in. Being that it has no skeleton to conatin its shape, the squid is capable of hiding itself perhaps even better than the chameleon. It is speculated that squid utilize patterns of color to communicate with each other, some even going as far as to imply that they may have a language of colors. I am no longer a strict vegetarian, but I will never eat squid...if only because the brain power neccesary to control a color pattern on one's skin must be enormous. And that's freaky...thinking about eating someone who may be smarter than you. I myself never was to bright.

2008-02-27 Roger Rabbit
Fact: The film Who Framed Roger Rabbit does not officially have a "?" in its title. It is seen in Hollywood to be bad luck to end a film's title with one. Also, the "Cloverleaf" subplot is more or less the plot for the aborted third chapter in the Jack Gettes trilogy that started with Chinatown and currently ends with its sequel the Two Jakes. If You haven't seen Chinatown it is brilliant and brutal enough that its narrative ending up in a cartoon is kind of crazy...even though Roger Rabbit is a wicked awesome movie.

2008-02-15 A cat actually laps water by curling their tongue down instead of up.

These four nice young men from Las Vegas have created quite the buzz

Las Vegas-based emo superstars Panic! At The Disco will decamp to
London's legendary Abbey Road studios later this week to work on the
follow-up to 2005's A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.

"[It's] truly is a dream come true for us," said the band. "Over the
next five days we will finish in the studio at home and make our way to
Abbey Road Studios in London. There, we will record all of the strings,
horns, whatchyamacallit's, and so on. Then, we will mix the record at
Abbey Road as well."

Abbey Road was made famous in the 1950s, 60s and 70s by legendary
British artists such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dame Shirley Bassey
and er, Cliff Richard.

The band's as-yet-untitled new album will be released in the summer
through Fueled by Ramen. However, if you can't wait 'til then, they've
posted a rough mix of new track Were So Starving on their MySpace page.

"This is not the final mix or version of the song," they say."It
will undergo some change while we're in London, but we wanted to show
you something from what we've done so far. Hope you enjoy."

Posted by Dan at 03:18PM | January 7, 2008 (source)

"The short story is that our site got hacked, and we don't know what's happened to it," frontman Brendon Urie added. "Now our songs are getting leaked, and all hell is breaking loose."

S-u-u-r-e, guys. The mystery surrounding Panic's site started last week, when strange, "Wheel-of-Fortune"-inspired word puzzles and invisible clocks began to appear. And it continues to grow, first with the revelation of a single phrase, "You don't have to worry," and then with the appearance of a jigsaw puzzle, featuring the date "01.01.08" and a muffled, five-second snippet of a song, presumably from the band's upcoming album.

So, really. What's the deal?

"['You don't have to worry'] is a lyric in the first track of our new record," explained drummer Spencer Smith. "We chose it to open the record, [because] it was written for that purpose."

"It's like a disclaimer almost," Urie chimed in.

It bears mention here that this interview took place on the back lot of a studio in Los Angeles, where Panic were filming the video for "Nine in the Afternoon," the first single from their new, yet-untitled album. And while the bandmembers were decidedly less-than-forthcoming with details about the song, they did say that it was the first one they wrote for the album — but it's not clear if that's counting all the songs they reportedly scrapped earlier this year.

"This is the first song we wrote. It's a song we all wrote together. It's basically about our situation for the past few years, just kind of looking at it all in a good way, and as a positive thing," guitarist Ryan Ross said. "It's one of the most straightforward songs we've ever had, lyrically. We wanted to have a song people could just get on the first listen. ... It was one of those spur-of-the-moment songs that came together in a couple of hours. It's just a fun song; it's not really meant to be taken seriously."

And as for the video itself, well, there's not much we can give away, except to say that there are gratuitous fake moustaches involved. And a rather bizarre parade being led by the guys in Panic, who are dressed in what could only be described as "Sgt. Pepper's-meets-ice-fishing" attire (lots of epaulets and thermal underwear). Each of them also wears a sash printed with the phrase "Pretty Odd." Perhaps that's another clue in the ongoing Web site mystery? Or, even something simpler, like maybe the title of the record?

"You can't know yet. It's a secret," Ross teased. "There's a lot of surprises ahead, [but] it has a meaning."

"If you do this interview again in a couple months, we'll tell you," Smith added. "It's not that we don't want to tell you; it's that we're not allowed. It goes along with the theme of the whole record."

Panic! at the Disco on the set of their video for "Nine in the Afternoon"
Photo: MTV News

"It's like a disclaimer almost." — Panic! at the Disco's Brendon Urie on the band's "You don't have to worry" lyric
